Opening Speeches
In the course of the opening ceremony, some delegations deliver opening speeches for the country they represent. An opening speech lasts one minute. The speaker should concisely describe the general position of the country he represents and then briefly elaborate on a matter, which is of remarkable importance for his delegation.
How do you get to take a speech?
Every delegation can be asked to deliver an opening speech to the MUIMUN plenary meeting at the Opening Ceremony. In order to do so, each of these delegations assigns one of its members to be their representative at the ceremony. Individual delegates can indicate their desire to speak at the opening pageant by including a corresponding note in the registration comment section. It is also possible to send an email to the Delegate Service Team or the General Secretariat when registration has already finished, however, MUIMUN cannot guarantee for an assignment to speak.
When do you speak?
As speaker elect you will deliver your address in a predetermined order among other representatives. Opening speeches will be part of the MUIMUN Opening Ceremony; they are scheduled subsequent to the session opening by the Secretary-General. During a briefing prior to the ceremony you will be informed about details on the course of the event. Please find the appointed time for that meeting in the valid conference schedule.
Composition of an Opening Speech
An Opening Speech consists of two parts, salutation and body. In the salutation section you address the President of the plenary meeting, the Secretary-General and the other representatives. During the second and main part of your speech you should briefly state your nation’s main goal for the conference and you may elaborate on some steps on your way to get there. As the speech only lasts one minute you will only be able to sketch your objectives, nonetheless you should be considerate about what you say because you are speaking for your whole delegation.
